The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire students for the programs.   



Training Dates: September 28- October 8 in Cleveland, Ohio, (paid mandatory training: Housing, food, and mileage reimbursement provided) 


Program Dates: September 12 – December 9 


Location: Pittsburgh PA 



Primary Responsibilities: 

The BIPOC Conservation Corp Crew in Pittsburg is an inclusive and intersectional group experience dedicated to fostering the success of black, indigenous, and communities of color with the aim of promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion within the conservation profession. As Crew Leader, you will be working with 6 young adults and a co-leader in Pittsburgh Pa.   Participants will provide conservation services in Pittsburgh parks and communities, learn why this work is important, and prepare for future employment opportunities in the conservation field. There will be opportunities during this program to gain a certification in Wilderness First Aid, and other certifications that will build your conservation career resume.  The crew experience will include paid time for recreational activities during crew hours.   



Specifically, the Crew Leader will: 

Act as a Crew Supervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics 

Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship  

Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA 

Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staff 

Leader Qualifications: 

Experience working with youth or young adults [Enter preferred age range here], teaching or environmental education a plus 

Experience with conservation work skills or related skills preferred – i.e., trail maintenance, trail construction, habitat restoration, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening 

Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements, and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more 

Must be able to attend Crew training in Cleveland Ohio September 28-October 8. 

Must be a minimum of 21 years of age 

Must have the ability to legally work in the US 

Must have a valid driver’s license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA standards 

Must be able to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards 



Leader Benefits and Compensation: 

$700 weekly stipend 

There is no housing provided for this position.  We will train with Cleveland Metroparks staff in Cleveland Ohio from September 28th – October 8th.  Housing, food, and mileage reimbursement is provided for that training. 

Wilderness First Aid Training certification is provided at a $300 value

Additional Information: Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA volunteer program participants are required to provide proof of up-to-date vaccination against COVID-19. Per CDC guidance, up-to-date vaccination now includes all recommended COVID-19 vaccines, including any booster dose(s) when indicated. For example, if someone has completed the primary series but is not yet indicated for a booster shot, they are considered up to date. Once a person is indicated for a booster (6 months after Pfizer or Moderna primary series, 2 months after J&J primary series), full and up-to-date vaccination includes the completed booster shot.
