The Washington Department of Natural Resources is looking for a Recreation Crew Member for their Snoqualmie Unit recreation development and maintenance team. This position performs and coordinates a variety of technical duties related to the development and maintenance of hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails. This includes the day-to-day field operations of existing trails, campgrounds, trailheads and the construction of new recreation trails and facilities over multiple locations within the Snoqualmie Unit and at other assigned locations within the South Puget Sound Region.

This position will predominantly perform construction and operational tasks in renovating & developing new recreation trails and recreation support facilities both independently & under the direction and direct supervision of the Snoqualmie Unit Recreation Crew Lead while also working as a team member with the Snoqualmie Recreation Equipment Operator. In addition, this position provides periodic support to the recreation maintenance program during periods of heavy recreation resource maintenance backlog, assisting with maintenance of trails and facilities while working under the guidance and direction of the Snoqualmie Unit Recreation Maintenance & Land Use Manager.

Responsibilities:
Operates and maintains various hand tools, power tools, excavators, and small earth moving equipment in order to implement trail and facility construction activities and periodically, recreation renovation and maintenance activities. This position will also help coordinate/lead in the supporting/monitoring/supervising and organizing of projects and work parties with Washington Conservation Corps (WCC), volunteer groups, correction crew’s and other crew resources. Projects and/or work parties include things such as: stream/ecological restoration, recreation trail and facility construction and decommissioning, recreation trail bridge installation and decommissioning, culvert repair and installation. Position will routinely meet and interact with the public and must be able to inform them regarding agency rules, goals and objectives. Monitors the activities to support grant and capital project implementation, which may include assisting with grant documentation and project budget tracking.

Required Qualifications: 
Must be able to cover reasonable distance on foot per day in the field on moderate to difficult terrain.
Must be able to back up with a loaded trailer on narrow forest roads, or be able to complete Trailer Training class with in the first 6 months of employment.
Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds.

Conditions of Employment:
A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
Incumbent must be able to work alone and traverse steep, uneven terrain in all weather conditions. The position will require operating a four wheel drive vehicle on highway and forest roads, as well as trail hiking, operation of light equipment, and riding mountain bicycles on trails of moderate to difficult terrain
Local travel within the Snoqualmie Unit, with occasional travel to other parts of the South Puget Sound Region.
Employees of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment. Desired Qualifications: 
At least 4-years of driving experience.
At least 2-years of natural resource-related labor experience, such as trail maintenance, or recreation maintenance.
At least 1-year experience operating grip hoist cable systems and mini excavators or similar equipment.
Understanding of current recreation management plans and associated agency policies, procedures and rules.
Knowledge of: DNR and USFS trail design standards; maintenance standards and various maintenance activities associated with recreation facilities, including trails, trailheads and day-use facilities; and methods and practices of construction activities.
Strong outdoor skills, as well as mountain bike riding skills and motorized ORV riding skills.
Wilderness Medical Training (WFR, WAFA, WFA).
Must be able to read maps and use a GPS to navigate forest roads and trails.
Previous experience performing trail work, including maintenance and building new trails and trail bridges.
Previous experience leading, assigning, and complying work to crews, volunteers with various skills, and contractors.
