The Student Conservation Association (SCA) seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire young adults (ages 18+) on one of three teams serving with the U.S. Forest Service in Minnesota and Wisconsin during the 2021 spring-summer season.



Project leaders for these teams will supervise a crew of three members. Teams will be camping at either front or back country sites within National Forests; some teams may have access to local housing. Work projects are a mix of trail construction/maintenance and campsite maintenance.



Each crew members will receive two weeks of training before starting work, which includes SCA member training, wilderness medicine certification, and trail work skills training. Some teams may also go through chainsaw and crosscut training.



Compensation and benefits: 

$800/week (paid bi-weekly)
Housing and field-based meals
Travel stipend (up to $1,150)


Primary Responsibilities:

Act as a crew leader for three young adults (18+) to inspire and teach crew members, promote healthy group dynamics, and facilitate effective and productive teamwork;
Function as a technical advisor, assisting in training corps members to complete quality work with guidance and direction from the US Forest Service supervisor;
Serve as a partnership representative managing relationships with the agency partner and ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects;
Perform tasks as a program administrator by communicating with SCA staff, completing documentation and managing a budget; and
Work variable hours, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, in varying weather conditions, and under physically demanding circumstances.
Use technical equipment including a chainsaw, backpack sprayer and other hand tools.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Experience managing crews of young adults in an outdoor setting and working with environmental organizations or agencies to plan and complete a project;
Experience using a chainsaw
Strong conservation work skills, a great work ethic, and the ability to motivate, inspire, and lead their crew members
Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or Wilderness First Responder (WFR);
Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation;
Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s); strong project management skills
Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers); and
Clear communication via written, spoken, and graphical means.


Minimum Qualifications:

Must be a minimum of 21 years of age;
Must have ability to legally work in the US;
Valid driver’s license and motor vehicle record (MVR) that meets SCA standards required;
Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards;
Current First-Aid and CPR certification required by the start of the season;
Ability to safely operate a chainsaw and other power tools, two-way radio, and other handheld equipment.
Ability to safely operate a four-wheel drive vehicle on remote, rough, and narrow mountainous roads with a trailer
Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8-10 hours per day, exposed to the elements and most occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more.
