Job Description: SARATOGA/CAPITAL DISTRICT REGION
VACANCY NOTICE
TITLE: Park and Rec Aide 6-Trail Crew Leader
PAY RATE: $14.96/hour
LOCATION: Saratoga/Capitol Region, Saratoga Springs, New York
NEGOTIATING UNIT: CSEA (Operational Services Unit)
WORK SCHEDULE: Mon-Fri, 8:00am-4:30pm from 5/25/21-10/1/21

OVERVIEW OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Regional Trails Manager, the Trail Crew Leader oversees the regional trail crew and trail project
operations in the field. Projects may include new trail construction, tread and drainage improvements, carpentry of
dimensional lumber projects, stone staircases and retaining walls, hazard tree/limb removal, and general facilities
maintenance. Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, with both hand and power tools. The position requires
work on uneven and steep terrain, carrying and moving tools, materials, and equipment of 50 pounds or more.
Responsibilities include but aren’t limited to:
• Leading & Supervising the regional trail crew for all trail projects
• Leading & Supervising any volunteers that help with trail projects
• Assist or Lead trainings for the regional trail crew on tool use, tool maintenance and tool storage practices
• Responsible for keeping track of tools/gear/equipment used every day
• Manage & keep track of the crew members hours worked every pay period and submitting completed timecards
• Responsible for keeping the provided state or rental vehicle records & sign outs Daily. Responsible for seeing the
provided state or rental vehicle cleaned for operations Weekly

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
❖ Must be at least 17 years old and have a valid drivers’ license.
❖ Must be available for all trainings as required.
❖ Must be able to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time outside.
❖ Must be able to serve for the full duration of the position

OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
❖ Leadership, volunteer coordination, and project management experience
❖ Experience with outdoor labor, working on a trail crew, and First Aid & CPR certifications are strongly desired.
❖ Capable with instruction to safely use a variety of hand and/or power tools; shovels, pick mattocks, rock bars,
sledgehammers, hammers, electric cordless drills & electric carpentry tools, rigging gear; grip hoist, rock nets &
slings etc.)
❖ Capable with instruction to safely operate, maintenance, sharpen and clean tools/gear/equipment.
❖ Capable of lifting loads up to 50 lbs.
❖ Capable of doing backcountry trail work efficiently & safely in rough uneven terrain during summer conditions,
while maintaining a good positive attitude.
❖ Must demonstrate teamwork and display high standards of ethical conduct.
❖ Able to represent the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Professionally
