Job Title: 2021 California Trail Corps Project Leader

Job Description: Program Season: April – October
Virtual Project Leader Training: 4/19/2021 to 4/23/2021
Project Leader Planning and Field Training: 5/9/2021 to 5/22/2021
Members Arrive on site: 5/24/2021(projects range from 9 -18 weeks in length)
Members Depart and Program Wrap Up: Dates will vary depending on project location

The Student Conservation Association seeks applicants to mentor and inspire young adults for conservation Corps Teams across the US. Project leaders supervise a crew of 3-5 members aged 18 to 30. Corps Teams work with multiple state and federal partners in both front and back country settings. Work projects are a mix of trail construction and maintenance, invasive species removal, and fuels reduction for wildfire management. Project leaders coordinate with agency partners to plan and implement projects, and with SCA staff to manage crew safety, performance, and logistics in the field. Typically, work hitches involve living and working with the crew for the duration of the season.

Potential projects could include:

Trail maintenance or construction projects on front country or backcountry trails
Erosion control, water damage repair
Fuels reduction/mitigation
Facilities maintenance
Fence construction or repair
Invasive species monitoring and/or removal 
Restoration of OHV routes
Potential Project Partners and Locations (Please note- placements will be determined by matching leader candidate skills with project needs) 

2021 Western Roving Trail Corps

Member dates: 5/23 – 8/14

Crew size: 4 members, I PL

Description: This is a traveling team. The team will be assigned to a trail project on either the Wallowa-Whitman NF in WA or a trail project with the BLM in the Central Coast of CA near Monterey (I hope to lock down which one this week) for 8 weeks after training and then transition on to Yellowstone National Park for a backcountry trail project for 4 weeks. WFR and solid trail skills are preferred.



Shasta Trinity National Forest Crews: WFR is preferred.

2021 South Fork Fire Recovery and Trails Team

Member dates: 5/23 – 8/14

Crew size: 3 members, 1 PL

Description: The team will be looking to restore trails damaged from a massive wildfire. The crew will be mostly working on backcountry trails and will get crosscut certified to help log out the trails. 


2021 Yolla-Bolly Fire Recovery and Trails Team

Member dates: 5/23 – 7/24

Crew size: 6 members, 2 PLs

Description: This team will also be working on trails damaged by wildfire. The forest service got a special permit for the team to use chainsaws on the Yollo Bolly Wilderness. We’ll be putting the members through an S-212 saw training before they hit the field. 



Red Salmon Fire Recovery Team

Member dates: 5/23 – 8/14

3 members, 1 PL

Description: This is a trail crew that will be working on backcountry trails. This team will get crosscut certs and will be spending most of their time in the backcountry. 

Sequoia Forest Trail Team

Member dates: 5/23 – 9/11

Crew size: 3 members, 1 PL

Description: This just got approved, so I don’t have much information. Basically, this will be a backcountry trail crew that will get crosscut saw certs when they arrive at Sequoia National Forest. I don’t think that the Forest Service has lined out their project work yet, but I want to put the crew through a full work skills training before they head out to the site. 

Snow Mountain Wilderness Trail Corps

Member dates: 5/23 – 9/4

Crew size: 5 members, 1 PL

Description: The team will restore twenty-five miles of hiking and riding trails within the Snow Mountain Wilderness on the Mendocino National Forest (MNF), in this deferred maintenance project under the Great American Outdoors Act. The team will consist of one Project Leader and five team members. The team will work for a period of 13 weeks, starting on or about May 23, 2021, following about two weeks of advance training.

Compensation: $700-$800 per week (depending on project placement and experience), paid training, and travel reimbursement to/from Project Site up to $650-$1,000 depending on location

Qualifications:

Experience working with youth or young adults, managing group dynamics, teaching or environmental education
Experience with conservation work skills or related skills preferred (e.g. trail maintenance, chainsaw)
Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 10 hours per day, exposed to the elements, and occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
Must have a current Wilderness Medical Training (WFR, WAFA, or WFA) and CPR certification by start of training
Ability to implement and enforce SCA COVID policies and procedures
Comfort working and living in remote settings without access to internet or cell phone service
Must be able to virtually attend a Project Leader Training in April 2021
Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
Must have ability to legally work in the US
Must have a valid driver’s license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA standards required
Must be able to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
Current chainsaw or crosscut saw certification is a plus.
