Superior Hiking Trail - Silver Creek Reroute - MN
Project Description: The Silver Creek Reroute is located just outside Two Harbors, MN on the section between Gun Club Road and Fors Road. The reroute is entirely on private property.
In late 2020, a portion of the Superior Hiking Trail that travels through private property along Silver Creek was closed by the landowner’s request. The SHTA and the landowner have collaborated to identify a new route through the parcel that has a more
sustainable alignment and protects the fragile river bank.
The new route is approximately 1400 feet long. Of the 1400 feet length, it is anticipated that the majority of it will be full bench construction, but there will be approximately 170 feet of puncheon in five different locations, and another section that is flat and will need puncheon or raised tread that is approximately 120 feet in length.
The trail must be built with a finished tread width of 18 to 24 inch, full-bench
construction where possible, with a cleared corridor width of approximately 36 inches on
either side of the center of the trail, for a total cleared width of 72 inches, or six feet.
Trail can be roughed in with machinery, not to exceed 48-inch track width, but must be
finished with a hand crew.
