Nature Trail Renovation and Construction Phase 1 - Lamberton NJ

Project Description: The City of Lambertville owns wooded hillside properties rising above Ely Park east of Main Street, extending from Phillips Barber Road at the north end south to York Street. An existing hiking trail, known as the Lambertville Nature Trail, runs north to south in this area. The trailhead is on Alexander Road in Lambertville. The purpose of this project is to make improvements where necessary to the existing trail, and to expand the trail system.

The portion of the existing trail that will be retained is 1,816 linear feet, primarily in good condition and consistent with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service (USFS) requirements for a Standard Terra Trail; Trail Class 3, Developed. The section of trail leading from the Alexander Road Trailhead needs to be rerouted to prevent erosion. With this rerouting a new Multiple Log Stringer or Sawn Timber Stringer Trail Bridge of approximately 26 linear feet will be required to cross a natural swale. There is an existing wooden bridge 29 feet in length that is in generally good condition and crosses a second swale. It should be inspected, and if any repairs are necessary, they should be included in the scope of the project. Bridge details can be found here:
https://www.fs.usda.gov/recreation/programs/trail-management/documents/plans/trail_bridge_pdfs/COMBINED_STD_TRAIL_BRIDGE_PLANS.pdf

The project area abuts a Delaware River tributary, locally referred to as Ely Creek, to the west and south. This perennial stream lies outside of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) 100-year floodplain and is exempt from Flood Hazard Area (FHA) permit requirements. It is unknown if wetland areas exist adjacent to Ely Creek.

This project proposes to construct one new bridge, repair all eroded portions of the existing trail, and construct new trails totaling 4,923 linear feet to expand the existing trail system. Refer to Figure 1 below for details.

The goal of the nature trail construction project is to create a sustainable hiking trail that is optimized for use by walkers, hikers and trail runners of most skill and ability levels. The trail shall be constructed to meet the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service (USFS) requirements for a Standard Terra Trail; Trail Class 3, Developed; Hiker/Pedestrian Managed and Design Uses, with these modifications: Native materials should be used as much as possible, and there should be no or minimal clearing of vegetation outside trailway. The only structure anticipated is the new bridge mentioned above. The majority of users are anticipated to be of beginner and intermediate skill levels; therefore the final layout and construction shall be considerate of those ability levels.
