Job Title: Wilderness Trail Construction Project Manager

Job Description: American River Ranger District (ARRD) in Foresthill CA on the Tahoe National Forest is recruiting several Forestry Technician (Trails) for the Granite Chief Wilderness Reroute Project. We are seeking two experienced trail-builders who are interested in providing technical oversight during project implementation. Granite Chief Wilderness Project Managers (GCW PM’s) would work collaboratively together during the construction phase of the project to make sure wilderness trail construction standards are being met. 

Employees will need to live and work in federally designated wilderness during the 14–16 week assignment on a 40-hour work week schedule (Wednesday- Saturday). Opportunities for overtime exist. Camping is required for this position and per diem will be available. Granite Chief Wilderness Reroute Project implementation will begin late June and continue into middle October of 2022. 

Rate of pay: $24-$26/hr

Primary duties include (but are not limited to): 
• Teaching and instructing sustainable trail construction methodology to a twenty-person conservation corps trail crew. 
• Constructing trails by hand in federally designated wilderness for extended durations of time. 
• Managing and documenting the crew trail production rates and ensure timelines are being met.  
• Using trail construction standards and principles, making sound decisions relating to the reroute construction project with an emphasis on trail design and sustainability.  
• Effectively communicating construction methodology and implementation strategies to partner organization and volunteers. 
• Representing the Forest Service and its mission professionally and safely at all times. 
• Constructing rock retaining walls, safely quarrying rock, building check steps, rock waterbars, constructing reverse grades and associated rock structures for optimal trail sustainability.  

The work is performed in a sub-alpine forest environment. Work often occurs in inclement weather (rain, snow, freezing or hot temperatures). Work requires use of personal protective equipment: 8” boots, hardhat, gloves, eye protection, long sleeves and long pants.
