Historic Preservation Crew- Reconstruction Era National Historic Park
Training Dates: unknown/first week of program (paid mandatory training)
Program Dates: Jan 3 – June 23, 2023 (members Jan 9 – June 16)
Location (City and State): St Helena Island, SC
Primary Responsibilities:
The Crew Leader will be working in collaboration with SCA Historic Preservation staff and NPS/HPTC staff to coordinate historic preservation projects at Reconstruction Era National Historical Park. The project will include window restoration, siding repair and replacement, relocating an ADA ramp, step, column, and porch repair, and cedar shake replacement. The project will take place on Darrah Hall, one of the oldest structures still standing at the Penn Center which was used as a school building for formerly enslaved people of St Helena Island.
Specifically, the Crew Leader will:
Act as a Crew Supervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics
Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical preservation trade skills, mentoring personal and professional development
Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA
Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staff
Leader Qualifications:
Experience working with youth or young adults
At least 1 year of preservation trades experience such as window restoration, carpentry, preservation maintenance, etc.
Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements, and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
OSHA 10 or 30 and Lead Safe Renovator Supervisor certifications preferred
Must be able to attend Crew Leader training: TBD
Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
Must have the ability to legally work in the US
Must have a valid driver’s license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA standards
Must be able to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
Housing is provided and shared with crew members. Leaders will be provided a private room.
Leader Benefits and Compensation:
$800 weekly stipend
$1000 travel stipend
Housing is still being determined but will likely be at the Penn Center Hotel, Leader will have a private room and Wi-Fi.
Leaders will receive training on all required SCA systems, First Aid, OSHA 10, Lead Safe Awareness, and on-the-job training from NPS and HPTC preservation professionals in all necessary skills for the project.
