Job Title: Houston Riparian Restoration Conservation Corps Leader

The SCA, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and The Houston Parks and Recreation (HPARD), are looking for a detail-oriented, highly motivated, and independent conservation team to join the 2022 Riparian Restoration Conservation Corps Team.
Leader Dates: 8/30/2022- 11/27/2022
Program Dates: 9/12/2022- 11/20/2022 ( Dates leader is leading team)
Compensation:$700/week total salary, paid training
PrimaryResponsibilities:
This team will design and carry out hands-on riparian restoration projects in partnership with TCEQ and SCA in Houston Parks and Recreation sites. The location is all adjacent to Houston bayous.
Responsibilities can include:
Conducts prairie and riparian habitat restoration
Works in the HPARD greenhouse to propagate plants for habitat restoration.(To be confirmed)
Performs trash cleanup of riparian areas.
Conducts invasive species removal using mechanical and/or chemical methods.
Lead community outreach events to educate citizens about the value of native habitat.
Maintains, calibrates, and operates SCA technical equipment.
Performs related work as assigned.
This will be an opportunity to explore new skills and undertake tasks that will impart lasting benefits to recreation sites. The program composition will consist of 1 Project leader and 5 Conservation Team Members and will be managed by the SCA Houston Program Manager.
Specifically, the Crew Leader will:
Act as a Crew Supervisor,by facilitatingteamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics
Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship
Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA
Perform tasks as aProgram Administrator,by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing abudget, and communicating with SCA staff
Qualifications:
Experience working with youth or young adults, teaching or environmental education a plus
Experience with conservation work skills or related skills preferred i.e. trail maintenance, trail construction, habitat restoration, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening
Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements, and most occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
Current First Aid and CPR certification required by the start of training
Must be able to attend Crew Leader training
Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
Must have the ability to legally work in the US
Must have a valid drivers license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA standards
Must be able to meet SCAs criminal background check standards
Must have personal housing arrangements in the program city

WFA/WFR certification preferred
Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA program participants are required to provide proof of up-to-date vaccination against COVID-19. Per CDC guidance, up-to-date vaccination now includes all recommended COVID-19 vaccines, including any booster dose(s) when indicated. For example, if someone has completed the primary series but is not yet indicated for a booster shot, they are considered up to date. Once a person is indicated for a booster (6 months after Pfizer or Moderna primary series, 2 months after J&J primary series), full and up-to-date vaccination includes the completed booster shot.
