Two crew leaders will support eight high school students over 12-weekend dates during the September to June school year. They will lead hikes and bike rides on the trail in collaboration with other community groups.

There will be a large educational component to this project as the crew leaders will gain background knowledge of the National Park Service (NPS), the history of the Civil War Defenses of Washington (CWDW) & Anacostia Parks, interpretation and natural history, alongside members, in order to be familiar with the resources to confidently educate the public about them.

The members will be challenged to develop creative and innovative ways to connect their neighborhoods to area NPS trails in SE Washington. Crew leaders will help support and mentor members as they navigate the NACE crew projects. Crew leaders will lead members as the NACE crew provides basic trail maintenance, invasive species removal, and corridor clearing along sections of the trail.

Crew leaders will ride bikes alongside members to develop their mountain bike skills with the end goal of the NACE crew supporting a bike patrol visitor resource program. The crew will do periodic bike patrols and safely engage with park visitors offering information about the park, local trails, or upcoming programs. Crew leaders will support the students to meet the objective of the program. Crew leaders will be responsible for project monitoring and data collection throughout the season.
