Job Title: SCA NH Conservation Corps Project Leader

Job Description: The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks an experienced, quality oriented outdoor leader to supervise, educate, and inspire the conservation stewards of the New Hampshire Conservation Corps program based in Bear Brook State Park in Allenstown, NH. 

Position Dates: March 22nd – October 29th, 2021 (Dates are slightly flexible)

The SCA NH Conservation Corps Project Leader plays a crucial role in the success of the conservation program, working closely with the Conservation Coordinator to train, supervise, and support 3 field crews of corps members completing technical trail projects, habitat restoration and visitor-use structure construction throughout New Hampshire. SCA NH Corps crews use traditional trail skills, restoration techniques, carpentry skills, and physical labor to complete an array of projects while camping on 11-day hitches. Typical projects include trail construction & maintenance, rock stairs, carpentry, bridge construction, invasive vegetation removal, and impacted site restoration. The program works in partnership with New Hampshire State Parks and AmeriCorps. The Project Leader is largely a field-based position spending approximately 80% of time traveling during the Conservation Service Season to project sites.

Primary Responsibilities:

Conservation Crew Support
• Work with Conservation Coordinator to provide field-based supervision, technical and leadership support to 3 active field crews
• Manage conservation projects, work outcomes and crew dynamics
• Facilitate team operations: tools & equipment, vehicles, work site management, basecamp operations
• Actively manage project/member risk by maintaining a safe work environment
• Regular travel to work locations to support projects and camp with crews

Technical Advisor
• Supervise and assist with work skills training for corps members
• Manage the quality & technique of project outcomes
• Promote leadership development of members and evaluate success & potential
• Actively manage risk in accordance with SCA protocols to maintain a safe work environment for program participants

Partnership Representative
• Model SCA mission and values to corps members, partners and the public
• Manage relationships and communication with agency partners
• Work collaboratively with agencies on project logistics 
• Ensure successful and timely completion of work projects

Program Administrator
• Assist Coordinator to complete required program reporting and documentation
• Assist Coordinator in equipment purchasing, budget management and reconciliation
• Ensure compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies & procedures
• Represent SCA in a positive and professional manner


Qualifications: 
• Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
• Previous trail construction experience and knowledge required
• Ability to perform trail construction and maintenance work in both wilderness and non-wilderness settings
• 1-2 years prior experience in supervising young adults in an outdoor setting
• Excellent communication, leadership skills and strong work ethic are required
• Self-starter, ability to work independently and as part of a team  
• Ability to carry heavy loads up to 50 pounds and be able to work in outdoor environment exposed to the elements including camping and hiking for extended periods of time, up to 11-days 
• Have working knowledge of safely operating power and hand-tools 
• Ability to access remote trail work locations and travel over rough, steep and rocky terrain
• Experience/certifications with chainsaw, rigging/Griphoist, and carpentry preferred
• Must have ability to legally work in the US
• Wilderness First Responder/CPR certification—or ability to get cert before position begins
• Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check (non-vulnerable population) standards
• Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
• Must have personal vehicle, mileage reimbursement available for work-related travel
