OVERVIEW OF ROLE: 

The OSMP Crew Lead role provides support and leadership to execute trail program objectives as well as department wide plans that support all charted land uses and open space purposes. Crew leads are responsible for field and project management, skills development, and administrative and logistical support of their crew and overall trails program. The Trail Crew Lead is expected to perform and guide others in trail construction and maintenance under minimal supervision. As a Crew Lead, you will coordinate and direct work with other agency partners such as OSMP Jr. Rangers, conservation corps crews, volunteers, and other groups and individuals assigned to trail projects. This position requires hiking up to 10 hours per day, carrying a backpack and hand tools, and working outside in inclement weather and in mountainous terrain.  



EXAMPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES: 

Project and Personnel Management (70%)

Directs crew to complete routine maintenance, repair and construction on trails and related structures and facilities
Provide field support, training, and comprehensive performance evaluations to crew
Conduct daily safety briefings and complete safety logs.
Ability to stay engaged and motivate others with the task at hand for up to 10 hours at a time, especially when tasks are repetitive and physical in nature. 
Maintain regular communication on status of projects with project managers and supervisors


Mentoring Staff (20%)

Develop and facilitate on-the-job tool training, leadership, and team development activities to crews and other agency partners
Deliver instruction on specialized skills such as rigging, dry stone construction, carpentry, and mechanized equipment.
Openly shares successes and challenges to support team learning and individual growth.


Reporting & Communications (10%)

Record daily work completed using asset management software
Take before and after photos of projects
Communicate project timeline, deliverables, and progress to project managers and supervisors  
Create end of project reports that highlight challenges and work completed


Other

Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.
Knowing all policies inclusive of safety and reporting any damage or infractions.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

Driver’s license and ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record. 
Acceptable background information including criminal history is required. 
One season of experience supervising work crews completing natural resource management or land management field tasks.

Integrity: Represent the City of Boulder and Open Space and Mountain Parks with integrity when interacting with the public and project partners.

Project management: Familiar with project management and variables involved including time, resources, standards, and responding to unexpected events. Ability to recognize needs, assess possible methods to meet needs, and act on solutions.


Preferred Competencies:

Ability to operate and use specialized equipment including trail dozers, excavators, power carriers, gas powered rock drills/breakers, winch and rigging equipment, chainsaws, grinders and sharpening tools, etc. 


What you will learn: 

You will receive training on operating machinery, chainsaws, rigging, wilderness first aid, trailer backing and towing, project management and scheduling coordination skills, and working with people with a variety of experience levels. 



Hiring timeline: 

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis starting the end of December. Interviews will start in January.
