Job Title: Trail Crew Lead/Trail Specialist

Job Description: TRAIL CREW LEAD & TRAIL SPECIALISTS

The Mountain Trails Foundation, a 30-year, 501c3 non-profit, trails advocate, located in Park City, Utah, is currently looking to hire individuals for seasonal, Trail Crew Lead positions, as well as general trail crew- “Trail Specialists”, each with the potential for year-round employment.  

The ideal candidates will possess strong leadership skills, with expertise in the design, development, and maintenance of system trails, including a knowledge of sustainable trail construction and strong project management skills. Working with and reporting to the Trails Manager, he/she will also have a keen understanding of the importance of interacting with volunteers, the public and land managers, and their role as an ambassador, on and off the trail.  

While this description is specific to the more experience-based, Crew Lead position, there is some overlap for the Trail Specialist position.

RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

• Prepares, organizes, leads and assists in all aspects of trail maintenance and construction projects as assigned by the Trails Manager
• Establishes priorities, coordinates tasks and directs staff in order to ensure trail construction and maintenance projects are completed safely and efficiently  
• Ground-proofing, flagging and GPS of purposed trail alignments with an understanding of grade and sustainable design  
• Operation of equipment and specialized tools for trail-building and maintenance  
• Works closely with the Trails Manager and all pertinent land managers/stakeholders  
• Oversees regular maintenance and inventory of a variety of specialized hand, power-tools and equipment, to ensure that they are in safe working order
• Maintains work trucks, ensuring timely oil changes, general maintenance, cleanliness and driving responsibly
• Coordinates volunteer training and oversight with a focus on safety and sustainable trail design
• Properly accounts for all expenses and receipts  
• Assists the Trails Manager in planning future projects
• Communicates regularly with Trails Manager, and Executive Director as needed


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

• Crew lead or trail contractor lead experience preferred. Self-directed and requiring minimal supervision  
• Knowledge of sustainable trail design, construction and maintenance techniques and terminology for both mechanized and hand-built trail.
• Experience operating trail-building machinery- excavators, skid-steers, etc.  
• Understands that a safe working environment is the highest priority and follows best safety practices at all times.  
• Basic knowledge of chainsaw use, safety and maintenance. Certification preferred.  
• Knowledge of specialized tools and equipment used in trail construction and maintenance
• Ability to work effectively with a variety of individuals and individual personalities
• Has a thorough understanding of the Mountain Trails mission, and represents the Foundation professionally, at all times 
• Ability to motivate and supervise work crews during short and long-term projects
• Ability to plan, implement and execute daily tasks for projects
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Ability to safely utilize and maintain specialized tools and equipment
• Should be an avid trail user and/or experienced mountain biker
• Ability to use basic mapping software and create maps is a plus
• First aid certification is a plus 
• Willingness to expand upon his/her knowledge-base by attending trail-builders school, IMBA trainings, etc.
• Knowledge of and familiarity with the local trail system is a plus
• Valid Driver’s License required
• Familiarity with Facebook, Instagram, Microsoft and Google Docs.  

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be able to hike, bike, work outside in the elements and endure vigorous, physical exercise.
• Must be able to carry and lift up to 50 pounds
• Must be able to be on your feet for several hours at a time

PAY:

Competitive pay, dependent upon experience. Trail Specialists starting at $22/hr. Trail Crew Leads starting at $24/hr. Yearly/seasonal bonus and pay increase potential. Paid insurance and paid time off for year-round employees.
