Job Title: Trail Crew Leader

Job Description: Reports to: Trails Supervisor
Position dates: Summer/Fall 2020 – Summer season runs late May through August, and fall season runs late August through October.

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), America's oldest conservation, education and recreation organization, is now searching for a Trail Crew Leader! The Maine Woods Initiative (MWI) is the AMC’s strategy for land conservation in the 100-Mile Wilderness. The Initiative is an innovative approach to conservation that combines outdoor recreation, resource protection, sustainable forestry and community partnerships. To date, AMC has purchased and permanently conserved 70,000 acres of forest land, created over 120 miles of recreational trails, opened three sporting camps to the public, established an FSC-certified sustainable forestry operation and developed a partnership with local Piscataquis County schools.

The Trail Crew Leader is responsible for overseeing the quality, safety and efficiency of trail crews through the summer and fall seasons in the construction of new trails, bridges, signs, access points and maintenance of existing trails.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Lead a crew of 4-6 professional trail workers and occasional volunteers on trail projects, managing project logistics in an organized, flexible and creative fashion.
- Maintain and enforce safety standards at all times.
- Maintain and develop relationships with agency partners and personnel throughout the region.
- Keep and accurately record all aspects of work as related to the construction and maintenance of new and existing trails, crew performance and general condition of tools and equipment.
- Assume responsibility for the cleanliness and general visual appearance of crew basecamp and spike camp sites.
- Maintain accurate financial records and control routine expenses based on an approved, annual operating budget.
- Perform equipment maintenance as required.
- Assist with the transportation of cargo to and from the lodges.
- Provide periodic backup support to lodge staff as requested.
- Provide friendly and attentive professional guest services.
- Implement energy conservation and environmentally sound practices in daily operations.
- Provide information to visitors and guests about the AMC, local natural and cultural history, risk management, outdoor recreation opportunities and AMC land management practices.

Qualifications & Experience:
- Extensive knowledge of trail maintenance, design and construction techniques for a variety of non-motorized trails.
- Experience in leadership positions preferred, especially in outdoor or trail crew situations.
- Ability to hike, perform trail work and instruct others in these activities as required.
- Ability to safely operate a variety of hand and power equipment and work for extended periods of time outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
- Physical ability to travel safely in the backcountry in all weather conditions, carrying up to 40 pounds of gear.
- Exceptional customer service skills and outgoing friendly attitude.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to be a solid team contributor while also working alone at times.
- Ability to complete a diverse variety of work tasks and non-conventional work schedules.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to use a computer to send and receive email and create Microsoft Word documents.
- Commitment to the Conservation-Education-Recreation mission of the AMC.
