The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire Washington DC area young adult members (18+) for the 2020 Rock Creek Park & Shenandoah Park Team.

Site Visit Dates: May 25-29 (this will be a one day visit to the park you have been assigned to; selected candidates will know this date in advance)

Training Dates: June 1- June 11 (mandatory paid training)

Program Dates: June 15- October 23, 2020 (must be available for the duration of the entire program)



Primary Responsibilities:

Mentor a crew of 6 young adult members as a solo leader, to complete much needed conservation service projects. Crew Leaders must have strong experience teaching or working with urban youth, be able to maintain a positive work environment and motivate students, and be willing to work outdoors. This young adult crew will work in Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC for 14 weeks. While working in Rock Creek they will work on two main project. One project will be focused on repairing fencing and the other will be eradicating bamboo from the park. The crew will then spend 3 weeks working in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. Here the team will work on deferred maintenance projects including campsite restoration and trail work. Project monitoring and data collection will also be required throughout the season.



Schedule:

For the duration of the program the team will work Monday- Friday. While the crew is working in Rock Creek members and leaders will commute each day to the worksite. During the 3 weeks the team is working in Shenandoah the team will camp onsite in the Park Monday-Friday and return to the DC area for the weekend. Leader is responsible for their own housing in the DC metro area.



Specifically, the Crew Leader will:

· Act as a Crew Supervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics

· Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship

· Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA

· Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staff



Qualifications:

· Experience working with youth or young adults (ages 15-25), teaching or environmental education a plus

· Experience with conservation work skills or related skills preferred – i.e. trail maintenance, trail construction, habitat restoration, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening

· Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements and most occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more

· Comfortable camping and setting up a base camp for team

· Current First Aid and CPR certification required by the start of training

· Must be able to attend Crew Leader training: June 1-11, 2020

· Must be a minimum of 21 years of age

· Must have ability to legally work in the US

· Must have a valid driver’s license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA standards

· Must be able to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards

· Must have personal housing arrangements in the Washington DC metro area

Compensation: $650/week total salary, paid training
