USFS Trail, Wilderness and Recreation Technicians
American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the
United States Forest Service Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest is seeking two Trail, Wilderness and Recreation Technicians. The member will dedicate 20 weeks with the Forest Service. The primary focus of this opportunity is to serve in supporting recreation resources and other forestry program areas. The member’s experience will focus on building the skill set and foundational knowledge of basic forestry techniques and practices. The right candidate will have a passion for the outdoors, working with people, backpacking skills/knowledge and comfortable with living in the outdoors.

Location: Logan Ranger District
Located in northern Utah's Cache Valley, the Logan Ranger District is a great starting point for adventuring outside. The District is home to Mount Naomi and Wellsville Mountain Wilderness Areas, the Logan Canyon Scenic Byway (Highway 89) and the Mount Naomi Peak National Recreation Trail. The District is also a scenic gateway to Bear Lake to the east and Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks to the north.
Outdoor enthusiasts can participate in a vast range of activities on the District. In the summer, activities include hiking, camping, rock climbing, mountain biking, horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, OHV riding as well as long time traditions such as hunting and fishing. The onset of winter doesn't slow down the action. Once the ground is blanked with a thick layer of snow, visitors can snowmobile, cross country ski or snow shoe across the District's infamous powder.

Compensation:
The member should anticipate serving 40 hours/wk and will receive a living allowance of $450/wk for food and incidentals, dispersed bi-weekly. Upon successful completion of this opportunity, individuals may be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award value at $2,255.24.
Housing: Members will be required to find their own housing for this position.
Position Description: The member will engage in the full range of standardized forestry support duties for recreation and wilderness. The range of duties include; trails construction, maintenance, wilderness character monitoring, trails and wilderness data collection, documenting compliance on parking, campfire, sanitation, use of picnic sites, or hunting and fishing, maintaining and cleaning up recreation/wilderness areas. The member may also perform secondary duties in wildlife, timber, and research as assigned.
Training Provided:The Forest service will offer position specific training(s), for the participant.
Project Environment: The member will spend extensive days in the outdoors, fully immersed in the forest environment. The work areas vary from established recreation areas to wilderness. The member must be able to work in varying conditions of temperature and weather. The terrain may be steep, uneven, rocky and covered with thick vegetation. The member is required to uphold all safety standards of the agency. The use of safety equipment is required, boots, gloves, goggles and a hard hat. The member must be physically fit and able to work long days. There may be field days that involve primitive camping and working.
Qualifications: Applicants should have a background, education and/or interest in Recreation Management, Environmental Studies, Ecology, Natural Resource Management or a closely related field, with a deep interest in advancing their career goals in recreation, wilderness and natural resource management. Resumes and cover letters must show detailed key project experiences.
Required:
● Members must be US citizen or possess a green card
● Since this position requires driving, members must be 21+
● Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required
● Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record
● Knowledge of standard forestry procedures, rules and operations in order to perform assigned forestry tasks that are already established by the supervisor.
● Knowledge of situational awareness and safety
● Ability to use simple instruments or tools such as diameter tape, relaskop or clinometer, increment borer, compass and chain to make accurate measurement.
● Ability to use hand and power tools such as ax, shovel, pulaski, fire rake, injector and/or chainsaw in order to perform forestry duties.
● Ability to use a radio, telephone, computer and field data recorders to compile and relay information.
● Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact with the public.
● Member must have a high a high fitness level and an interest in camping, with potential for backcountry work trips.
● Ability to work alone/in a small group with minimal supervision.
● Ability to work in small teams in close/remote settings.
● Experience and/or ability to learn use of GPS unit.
● Must be able and willing to work outdoors and be capable of lifting 50 lbs.
● Must be able to take initiative, work independently, and participate in collaborative efforts.
● Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals.
Preferred:
● 6-12 months previous trail or wilderness experience
● Previous experience using and maintaining hand tools and power tools
● S-212, Game or Logging, or MTDC Chainsaw or crosscut saw certification
● ATV certification
● Leadership skills
● Data collection experience
Member must be willing to represent ACE and the Forest Service in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
