What We Can Achieve Together:

The Recreational Technician performs and participates in planning, building, and maintaining recreational amenities on TNC preserves. The position is a 2-4 month temporary position with benefits. Position may be extended based on available funding. The Recreational Technician (RT) organizes and leads work teams and volunteers to ensure the coordination, community support, implementation, and maintenance of recreational trail systems and amenities on select TNC preserves that are frequented by the visiting public as part of TNC’s Inspiring People for Nature strategy. Other duties include maintenance of tools and equipment, on-foot trail assessments, managing recreation construction projects, and as-needed assistance with other TNC programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

• Work will be done in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
• Work will often be done independently and/or under minimal and/or distant supervision; may make some independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and context.
• Frequently uses hand and power tools to repair/build wooden bridges, repair/build trail tread, construct drainage structures, and construct stone features.
• May lead or monitor work groups consisting of staff, interns, and volunteers to complete trail maintenance and construction activities.
• Develops and executes recreation amenity maintenance and work plans for all of TNC recreation preserves.
• Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, negotiating, contracting, and managing vendors, assisting with budget development and supporting fundraising staff.
• Networks with diverse groups, including landowners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy and publicize Conservancy programs/preserves.

What You’ll Bring:

• BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in recreation/science-related field and 1 year related experience in recreational planning and land management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience in trail building and/or planning trail systems or recreational amenities.
• Must have a valid driver's license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience planning and building sustainable trail systems using hand tools.
• 1 – 2 years related experience in recreational use planning, ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Some experience managing volunteers or entry level staff.
• Knowledge/understanding of current trends and practices in trail construction, recreational use management and natural resource preservation/conservation or similar field.
• Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
• Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).
• Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
