Job Title: C&O Canal National Historic Park Towpath Crew- Leader

Job Description: Conservation Begins Here. The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire young adult members (18+) for the 2022/2023 C&O Canal Program. Work as a leader to help preserve and protect this beautiful and historic National Park Service site. Training Dates: September 6 – September 9, 2022 (mandatory paid training) Program Dates: September 12, 2022 – May 5, 2023 Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 6:00am - 3:30pm (A Week), Monday - Thursday 6:00am - 3:30pm, Friday off (B Week). Up to five hours per week of administrative work outside of normal work hours. Program Location: C&O Canal National Park. This position will be based out of Oldtown, Maryland. Leader will report to the maintenance shop located at; 18907 Green Spring Road SE Oldtown, MD. Primary Responsibilities: As Crew Leader, you will be working with and supporting three SCA members. This SCA team will support the CHOH maintenance staff with routine daily maintenance activities at the Oldtown Maryland shop. Primarily, this project requires the team to remove vegetation from historic stone culverts, locks, flumes, abutments, walls and any other historic stone structure within the park boundaries that the NPS deems the need for vegetation removal. In addition, this crew will assist the NPS staff with the removal of fallen trees in the park and along the tow path. The primary focus for the Oldtown crew will be on the restoration of several culverts within this section of the park. Crew Leader may receive chainsaw certification- dependent upon capacity of NPS staff to host training. Project monitoring and data collection will also be required throughout the season. Specifically, the Crew Leader will: Act as a Crew Supervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staff Qualifications: Experience working with youth or young adults, teaching or environmental education a plus Experience with conservation work skills or related skills preferred – i.e. trail maintenance, trail construction, habitat restoration, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more Current First Aid and CPR certification required by the start of training Must be able to attend Crew Leader training: September 6 – 9, 2022 Must be a minimum of 21 years of age Must have ability to legally work in the US Must have a valid driver’s license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA standards Must be able to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards Must have personal housing arrangements near the worksite Conditions of Employment: Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA program participants are required to provide proof of up to date vaccination against COVID-19. Per CDC guidance, up to date vaccination now includes all recommended COVID-19 vaccines, including any booster dose(s) when indicated. For example, if someone has completed the primary series but is not yet indicated for a booster shot, they are considered up to date. Once a person is indicated for a booster (6 months after Pfizer or Moderna primary series, 2 months after J&J primary series), full and up-to-date vaccination includes the completed booster shot.
