Job Title: DC Summer Conservation Crew Leader

Job Description: Conservation Begins Here. 

The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire Washington DC area high school students (age 15-19) for the summer program.  

Training Dates: June 6 – June 10, 2022 (mandatory paid training)  

Site Visit Dates: June 13 – 24, 2022 (this will be a one-day visit to the park you have been assigned to; selected candidates will know this date in advance) 

Program Dates: June 27 - August 5, 2022 (must be available for the duration of the entire program)  



Primary Responsibilities: 

Mentor a crew of 6-10 youth members either as a solo leader or with a co-leader, to complete much needed conservation service projects. Community Crew Leaders must have strong experience teaching or working with youth, be able to maintain a positive work environment and motivate students and be willing to work outdoors. The crew will be working on projects such as invasive species removal, habitat restoration, trail maintenance, and trail construction in various parks across the DC metro area. Project monitoring and data collection will also be required throughout the season. 



Specifically, the Crew Leader will: 

Act as a Crew Supervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics 

Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship  

Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA 

Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staff 



Qualifications: 

Experience working with youth or young adults (ages 15-25), teaching or environmental education a plus 

Experience with conservation work skills or related skills preferred – i.e., trail maintenance, trail construction, habitat restoration, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening 

Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements and occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more 

Current First Aid and CPR certification required by the start of training 

Must be able to attend Crew Leader training: June 6 – June 10, 2022 

Must be a minimum of 21 years of age 

Must have ability to legally work in the US 

Must have a valid driver’s license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA standards 

Must be able to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards 

Must have personal housing arrangements in the Washington DC metro area, preference will be given to candidates already located in and familiar with the area.  



Compensation: $725/week total salary, plus paid training 



Condition of Employment: Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA program participants are required to be fully vaccinated. Up to date vaccination is defined as having received a booster shot six months after the Pfizer and Moderna primary series and two months after the Johnson & Johnson primary series.
