Job Title: Trails Builder / Excavator Operator (TB)

Job Description: This is an hourly, seasonal position of the Sheridan Community Land Trust (SCLT) with all work being done in and around Sheridan, Wyoming; no travel out of area will be necessary. The position runs for 6 months (May – October). The TB is responsible for building and maintaining a growing non-motorized, natural surface trail, single-track styled trail network for the Sheridan Community Land Trust. This position is supervised by the Trails Program Manager.

This position requires extensive experience in building trails including operating a mini-excavator and other trail building equipment/tools, finish work, and knowledge of trail design and layout. During the season of employment, you will occasionally work with other trail staff including the Trails Program Manager, Seasonal Trail Technician(s), volunteers, and community members on new trail construction and trail maintenance. You will work with SCLT marketing staff to provide photos and video updates and / or social media post updates on your trail projects.

Overview SCLT: SCLT is a small non-profit that works to conserve open spaces and working ranches, preserve our vibrant history, and connect people with the places they love through non-motorized recreation. Sheridan is a growing, lively community tucked up against the Big Horn Mountains in north-central Wyoming. Currently we are developing and maintaining two multi-use, bike-optimized terrestrial trail systems- one on the nearby mountain and one cross-country system that traverses ranch land adjacent to the town- and approximately 50 miles of water trail on 3 interconnected water courses. Several other projects around Sheridan County are in the works.
Terms: Desired start date: May 2022. Length of position: 6 months. Position may be renewed annually. Schedule with SCLT: 40 hours per week, requires flexibility, some evenings/weekends to accommodate volunteers. TB will report directly to and is supervised by the Trail Program Manager (TPM).).

Description of Duties:
• Create the final layout for new trails within secured corridors. Construct non-motorized, natural surface, single-track styled trails using a CAT 301.5 mini excavator and finish equipment. Secure essential materials ahead of their use, this includes identifying to SCLT marketing staff any needed trail signage.
• Installing trail signage.
• Coordinate with the TPM when additional trail staff is needed to finish new trails.
Trail Builder / Excavator Operator - seasonal
• Assist the TPM and other trail staff in trail maintenance.
• Capture photos / videos and / or social media updates on your trail projects and share with SCLT marketing staff.
• Coordinate with TPM any trail closures.
• Help monitor trail conditions both on the ground and through our Trail Conditions Facebook page, inventory maintenance needs, and assist in budgeting/project planning for upcoming year.
• Act as an ambassador raising awareness and additional support. Educate public of programs and encourage responsible facility use.
• Assist in providing tours for funding and permitting entities.
• Perform other recreation-related miscellaneous tasks as needed.

Qualifications: 
• Ability to prioritize safety, understand dangerous situations and mitigations. 
• Ability to hike to, from, and remain in remote job site locations over uneven terrain 1-3 miles per day. 
• Ability to transport tools, supplies and fuels to and from remote job site locations. 
• Ability to perform routine daily inspections and maintenance of machinery. 
• Experience using mini excavator to build new, non-motorized trails. 
• Experience in trail design and layout. 
• Experience with other trail tools and equipment for finish work and maintenance purposes. Ability to safely operate and maintain chainsaws. 
• Specific Knowledge of mountain biking, hiking, trail running, and equestrian sports is a plus.
• Ability to perform work independently/unsupervised following written and oral direction involving multiple task assignments. 
• Ability to work effectively with others; to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. 
• Possess a vehicle capable of hauling materials/equipment/small utility trailer.

Physical Requirements and Work Conditions: 
• Physical exertion will be expected; job requires frequent bending, lifting and carrying objects 40-60 lbs. • Ability to work effectively for extended periods, sit for long periods on an excavator, work out-of-doors, at times in inclement weather and uneven terrain. 
• Willingness to work in environments where exposure to ticks, noxious weeds, warm and cold weather can occur.

Benefits and Compensation:
This is an hourly, seasonal, full-time position that offers flexibility to the TB. This position reports to the Trail Program Manager. The position has a negotiable hourly rate plus benefits that include paid leave, holidays, and the option to participate in an employee IRA retirement.
