Job Title: 450-Hour Environmental Steward/Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument
Job Description: Location: Patten, ME Housing: Not Provided, but the Host Site is willing to facilitate short term camping trips using LNT principles Days and Hours of Service: 40 hours per week: may include evenings, weekends and holidays. Host Site and Position Overview: The purpose of this position is to fulfill the mission of the Maine Conservation Corps (MCC), which is to accomplish conservation initiatives that inspire people and enhance communities. This is achieved by accomplishing conservation projects, creating pathways to employment, delivering environmental education, and engaging community volunteers. Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument comprises 87,563 acres in the Maine’s north woods and is managed by the National Park Service. The purpose of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument is to preserve the nationally significant natural, cultural and ecological resources associated with the north Maine woods; to facilitate the shared stewardship of the resources, landscapes and environments that contribute to the culture and identity of Penobscot, Maliseet, Micmac, and Passamaquoddy tribal nations; to safeguard the character of the free flowing and scenic rivers and streams within its boundaries; and to provide a broad range of opportunities for public enjoyment, recreation, and inspiration. The primary task for the Environmental Steward will be to serve as the Trails Program Volunteer Coordinator and assist with promoting and leading volunteer events. The ES will also assist with building new hiking trails and maintaining existing trails and visitor facilities in Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument. The ES will have the opportunity to shadow other staff in the monument and assist with Visitor Services and Resource Management. Description of Duties: • Recruit, lead, and support volunteers • Build new trails and rehabilitate existing trails in all seasons and weather conditions including: • Build timber structures (bridges, wooden ladders, retaining walls, etc.) • Construct stone and earth structures (reinforced grade dips, retaining walls, causeways, stone steps, etc.) • Clear trails (cut and haul brush, dig to mineral soil, pull stumps, etc.) • Other tread way work (crush rock, haul gravel) • Monitor use of trails • Assist park staff with ongoing trail related park projects • Engage in light maintenance tasks on a rotational basis with other staff • Interact with the public when encountered in the monument • Assist with stream surveys and other stream crossing projects Essential Functions: • Willingness to assist on trail and road maintenance and construction projects related to trails and infrastructure • Willingness and physical ability to work on a variety of conservation projects. • Ability to hike 3-12 miles per day in rugged terrain, often carrying heavy gear and tools • Serving in extremes of heat or cold, as well as being exposed to biting and stinging insects· • Flexibility, problem solving, and creative thinking. • Recruiting, retaining and collaborating with volunteers in a professional manner. • General ability to serve independently in the field and maintain equipment • Affinity for leading activities and discussions with volunteers • Heavy lifting, bending, and carrying up to 50 pounds • A valid Driver’s License Service Conditions: • These sites do NOT have good cell service or reliable wifi • The administrative office/headquarters is in Patten, Maine a small community with basic services – groceries, hardware, post office, cell service. • Service will often involve driving on gravel roads to access trailheads in Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument. • Service is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions and biting and stinging insects • Service involves some physical labor, and hiking with gear and tools over difficult terrain • Service involves travel to nearby locations Site Specific Qualifications: • Trail building experience (preferred) • Demonstrates a desire to learn, serve others, and make a difference (required) • General ability to serve independently in the field and maintain equipment, as well as an affinity for leading activities and discussions with volunteers (required)
