Job Title: Public Access Project Manager

Job Description: At Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST), we are committed to protecting nature in our region, fostering equity in all that we do, and positively impacting local biodiversity and climate resilience. As Public Access Project Manager, you would be responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of regional trail and public access planning projects in rural, urban, and suburban areas on the Peninsula and South Bay. These projects support our equitable public access vision and community engagement efforts contributing to regional landscape conservation. You would cultivate and foster strategic relationships with key partner organizations, stakeholders, the community and consultants to further our goals to protect lands that create a more connected network of regional trails and open spaces that can be enjoyed by all. POST is currently a combined remote and hybrid workplace, and our policy regarding hybrid work schedules continues to evolve. The successful candidate for this job must live within a reasonable driving distance to POST lands on the San Francisco Peninsula and in the South Bay. In this role you will: Serve as project manager or coordinator on implementation of trail and public access project planning, design, community engagement, permitting, easement and construction activities with internal staff, consultants and external partners and funders on POST fee-owned properties and collaborative multi-agency public access planning projects. Work closely with the Public Access Program Manager to develop and implement program goals and strategies. Coordinates with other members of the Land Department, DEI Team, Marketing & Communication, and Fundraising as appropriate. In coordination with the Public Access Program Manager and transactions staff, fulfill role of project manager or advisor on public access-related transactions, including acquisitions of land and trail conservation easements. In coordination with Public Access Program Manager and stewardship staff, fulfill role of project manager or advisor on public access-related stewardship and infrastructure projects. Foster and develop strategic relationships with a variety of stakeholders including partner organizations, community members and organizations, neighbors, and elected officials, where POST works. Develops and execute public access projects with an emphasis on providing equitable access to experiences in nature. Hire and supervise public access and natural resource professionals, contractors, and consultants with a variety of expertise (such as coalition and community facilitators, trail/transportation planning consultants, attorneys, and general contractors). Represent POST in regional public access network collaborations. Track and analyze opportunities to engage in regional public access, equitable access, and active transportation planning efforts that impact POST’s public access program goals and strategies. Cultivate relationships with trail and alternative transportation organizations, public agencies, and neighborhood and community organizations to build support. Coordinate implementation of project activities with internal staff, consultants and external partners and funders. Serves as POST’s ambassador to the recreational community by attending partner and community meetings and events To thrive in this role, you would have: Three to five years of related work experience in trail, park and open space planning, community outreach and engagement, and/or general land use planning and management College degree in a relevant field of study can be useful, or a combination of academic and life experience that builds a suitable knowledge base for the position will also be considered Direct knowledge of current trends and practices in public access planning, community engagement, outdoor recreation, conservation, land management, equitable public access, and natural resource protection Familiarity with trail design and alternative transportation planning Demonstrated ability to build relationships and effectively collaborate and communicate with diverse stakeholders Demonstrated experience successfully managing projects with minimal supervision A commitment to POST’s core values and our work in diversity, equity, and inclusion Outstanding planning and communication skills Familiarity with Peninsula and South Bay communities, landscapes and local government preferred Experience negotiating, tracking, and managing implementation of contracts Knowledge of land use planning and policy Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to handle multiple projects at the same time that are in various stages Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail Ability to work independently and meet deadlines Conversational Spanish language skills that could help your effectiveness as some of the public engagement is in Latinx communities Experience with project budgets and accounting Valid California Driver’s License and insurable driving record required in order to drive a personal or company vehicle to visit project sites, some that are remote This role has the following physical or scheduling requirements: Using a computer and office software, applications, and equipment on a continual basis, and sometimes in the field. Requires regular and accurate communication with others using telephone and video technology, and ability to interact effectively with digital and printed materials. The person in this role will sometimes need to move or transfer materials weighing up to 20 pounds. The ability to drive company vehicles to remote locations for site visits. The ability to traverse uneven, rough, or inclined terrain while in the field in order to carry out essential duties in managing land projects. The individual will be exposed to outdoor elements while assessing properties and performing site visits to manage projects. There are occasional meetings or duties that occur outside regular work hours to represent POST at fundraising events, or to attend public meetings or to meet with community groups when they are available in the evenings or on weekends.
