Job Title: SCA Indiana Dunes Native Plant Team Project Leader

Job Description: The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks 2 qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire young adults at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

For a decade, SCA has partnered with Indiana Dunes to run conservation corps teams throughout the National Lakeshore. This summer SCA will be fielding a 5 person team to work throughout the park on restoration projects, using a variety of methods including but not limited to: planting native plants, collecting seed, applying herbicide, removing shrubs and trees, monitoring and recording planting data, and invasive plant removal, community outreach and education activities. The team will have the opportunity to work with other park staff on special projects as they arise.

The crew itself will be made up of young adults (18-25) local to the area, who will be commuting to and from the National Lakeshore each day.

Leader Dates: April 20 – August 15, 2017 (including pre/post season tasks)

Field Season Dates: May 15 – August 6, 2017

Primary Responsibilities:

Crew Manager
--Ensure successful, quality, and timely work for a five person team
--Guide crew dynamics and facilitate teamwork
--Actively manage project/member risk to maintain a safe work environment

Technical Advisor
--Assist in the technical skills training of corps members
--Manage the quality & technique of work performed
--Promote leadership development within team and evaluate success & potential

Partnership Representative
--Manage relationship with agency partner
--Work collaboratively with agency on program logistics
--Ensure successful and timely completion of work project

Program Administrator
--Communicate with SCA field support staff
--Complete required program reporting and documentation
--Manage budget and necessary purchasing for crew and project
--Ensure compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies & procedures

Qualifications:
--Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
--Must have ability to legally work in the US
--Wilderness First Aid & CPR required by the start of training: Wilderness First Responder preferred
--Prior experience supervising long term volunteer groups in an outdoor setting
--Experience working with young adults (ages 18-25)
--Experience with invasive plant management (i.e. landscaping, gardening, seed collection, invasive plant removal, and plant ID
--Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
--Valid driver’s license for 3 years and MVR that meets SCA standards required
--Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards

Desired Skills Set:
--Previous work in conservation corps, environmental field work, or environmental education
--Experience with herbicide use and backpack sprayers
--Chainsaw experience

Compensation: $545/week depending on experience & skills; plus housing and paid training
