Job Summary

Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz (MBOSC) is a rapidly-growing non-profit organization driven by passionate volunteers and augmented by high-caliber professional staff. We are an organization of mountain bikers for mountain bikers. We foster a positive and pro-active culture at the intersection of recreation, stewardship, and community. We are expanding our professional staff to satisfy the ever-growing demand for what we do: to promote and expand legitimate mountain bike access in Santa Cruz County. 

We are seeking an experienced Trails Specialist to support and expand our trail and bike park stewardship program. The Trails Specialist will play a key role on MBOSC trail and bike park design, construction and maintenance projects.This position will work closely with volunteers, land managers, and other partner organizations on trail work and bike park projects.

Time Commitment: TBD
Salary: Based on Experience. 
Benefits:Negotiable. Specialized Bicycles will be supporting this role by offering the appointed Trail Specialist an Expert level mountain bike of their choice annually.
Responsibilities
Trail and Bike Park Stewardship (80%)
Plan, manage and coordinate volunteer trail work events in conjunction with Volunteer Coordinator
Work closely with project partner staff to coordinate and communicate project logistics and fulfill project expectations
Ensure use of best practices for all trail and bike park projects
Inspect and maintain MBOSC tools and equipment to ensure high level of safety and functionality
Track and record work progress and volunteer time in MBOSC trail work database.
Support and/or manage day to day MBOSC operations on trail and bike park construction projects including collaboration with other organizations and volunteers
Perform trails assessment to assess maintenance needs
Lead maintenance sessions at MBOSC adopted pumptracks
Assist with project planning and design
Assist in annual crew leader training program


MBOSC Event Support (10%)
Assist with logistics at MBOSC events and races including the Old Cabin Classic, Gravel Race, and member/volunteer appreciation events

Other projects and administrative tasks as assigned (10%)
Required Qualifications
At least 2 years of experience building and maintaining trails
Demonstrated knowledge of sustainable trail construction, maintenance and design, including progressive mountain bike oriented techniques and traditional practices
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Excellent time management, organizational and written and oral communication skills
Ability and desire to work with volunteers with a diverse range of backgrounds and skill levels
Chainsaw use certification
Off-road and trailer driving proficiency
Desired Qualifications
Proficiency with GIS software
Experience operating a range of equipment including mini excavators, skid steers, loaders, vibraplates, grip hoists, and rope winches
First Aid training
Familiarity with environmental rules, regulations and best practices
