Job Title: Fall Forestry Corpsmember 2020 (Denver)

Job Description: Fall Forestry (FF) is an intensive, team-based, 14 week-long program. Corpsmembers serve on conservation and environmental stewardship projects on public lands throughout the Denver metro area. Corpsmembers have the choice to serve on a variety of crews:

Sawyer Crew: Members operate chainsaws on wildland fire mitigation and invasive tree removal projects. They receive First-Aid/CPR and S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaws certifications. Some sawyers will have the opportunity to receive pesticide application training. The use of pesticide is common on invasive tree removal projects. 

Hand Crew: Members receive training in safe and efficient use of hand tools to complete a wide variety of projects. Examples include: trail maintenance and construction, installation of rock and timber trail structures, noxious weed removal, pesticide application, planting and mulching, fence repair and construction and other park development projects.

Womxn’s Crew: Inclusivity is a core value at MHYC, and the Womxn’s Crew embodies this value by creating opportunities for women, trans, and non-binary individuals to learn new skills in a safe and supportive environment. This crew will serve primarily on trail maintenance and construction projects with Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks.

Timeline: 
MHYC anticipates the position will run from August 17– November 20, 2020. (Option to start August 31.) This is subject to change due to COVID-19. This is a temporary position.

• 450 hours of service in a 14 week commitment. 
• Some positions may require overnight camping or bunking (known as hitches)
• 40 hour weeks: Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday, 6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. or 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. 

You Earn: 
• Biweekly Stipend: Earn a total living stipend of $5,320. The stipend will be paid every two weeks.
o Returning Corpsmembers are eligible for a total living stipend of $5,600.
• AmeriCorps Education Award: Earn a scholarship of $1,612.43 upon successful completion of the term (450 hours of service). This award can be used to pay tuition or pay back qualifying student loans. Individuals have 7 years to use the award.

You Receive:
• Trainings: Tool training and hands-on technical training related to all projects.
• Education: Lessons focused on environmental stewardship, leadership, civic engagement and college/career prep that will prepare you for life after MHYC. 
• Student Loan Forbearance: Corpsmembers can apply to put their qualified federal student loans on hold during their term through the National Service Trust.
• Health Insurance: May be eligible for health insurance the 1st of the month after serving at MHYC for sixty days. Member will have a monthly share of the health insurance premium. 

Qualifications:
• Must be between the ages of 18-24 and able to legally serve in the United States, which will be verified via the federal E-Verify program. 
• High school or GED graduate or still enrolled. 
• Must be eligible for enrollment in AmeriCorps as a US Citizen, National or Lawful Permanent Resident. Documentation will be required on the first day. Must bring identification documents necessary to complete the I-9 and other forms on your first day. 
• Must be physically fit, able to lift 50 lbs., spend 8-10 hours a day in all weather conditions (e.g., sun, snow, heat, wind, rain, etc.) and hike 7 miles with a day-pack. 
• Able to be on time and maintain consistent attendance throughout term of service. Must commit to complete the program. 

Requirements:
• Pre-service National Service Criminal History Check required. May be subject to FBI Background Check, which includes fingerprinting. This position does not have recurring access to vulnerable populations.
• Pre-service drug screen required. Drug testing may be required during term. 
• Member must not engage in any prohibited activities as listed in the AmeriCorps Member Service Agreement and appropriately represent Mile High Youth Corps both in behavior and dress code. 
• Fully comply with agency policies and procedures.
