Job Title: Environmental Steward - Trail Inventory Project

Job Description: Maine Conservation Corps (MCC), a division of the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, is charged with connecting individuals to conservation service opportunities for the benefit of the people and visitors of Maine. The mission of the MCC is to accomplish conservation initiatives that inspire people and enhance communities.

Two Environmental Stewards will serve in collaboration with MCC Conservation Planner and Director to continue the collection of data on Maine Parks and Public Lands recreational trails. Data will provide quantitative measures to test the effectiveness of trail construction and maintenance interventions; prioritize future rehabilitation needs; and create a data set of trail characteristics to form a state-wide trail classification system. Environmental Stewards will be the primary collectors of data, which will entail backpacking and hiking throughout Maine parks and public lands. Stewards will use an established system and means for assessing the current environmental conditions, qualities, and structures of Maine recreational trail systems by utilizing Survey123, ArcGIS, and measurement tools. Based on results and feedback, the data collection surveys, methods, and focus of the project may be modified throughout the season. The onset of the term will include refining data collection practices, data management, logistical coordination, and training.

Environmental Stewards will be provided training in effective data collection, use of measurement instruments and tools. Depending on selected candidates’ current certifications and skills, training may also be provided in Wilderness First Responder, Leave No Trace, backpacking, and introduction to trails.
