The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire a team of Alaskan youth in the summer of 2019.
Training Dates: May 20th-31st, 2019

Alaska Regional High School Crews
Alaska’s Regional High Crews consist of two leaders and a crew of 6-8 youth (aged 15-19) from across Alaska. Crews live and work in parks, forests and refuges across Alaska. Leaders camp with their crews in frontcountry or backcountry sites and work to complete conservation projects. Typical programs are four weeks in length and run from June through August.
Teams will live and work together for the month-long program and have the opportunity to build a small community. Crew Leaders are an integral part of the success of our teams, and they will be expected to strive for proactive communication, create a culture of growth, and professionally represent themselves and SCA. The Crew Leader position is filled with a diversity of tasks and responsibilities and offers a great opportunity to highly motivated candidates who are looking for an engaging and challenging atmosphere
Tongass National Forest YCC Leaders
YCC Leaders lead and manager a group of locally recruited youth to complete conservation projects and biological monitoring in the Tongass National Forest. Leader and crew will work together 5 days on/2 days off or 10 days on/4 days off with the youth returning home in the evenings or on weekends, depending on project location. Leaders are provided housing by USFS in the program communities. Multiple positions are available across the Forest and may involve kayaking, boat and small plane travel, and working with vulnerable populations.
YCC crews may participant in the following
• Construct and maintain trail
• Soil and water restoration work
• Wildlife management activities
• Recreation site maintenance work
• Painting and facility improvement projects
• Invasive species control
Primary Responsibilities:
Crew Manager Functions-
• Lead and manage work outcomes and crew dynamics
• Facilitate field team operations: food planning, tools & equipment, vehicles
• Actively handle any behavioral and crew dynamics issues as they arise, in coordination with Program Staff
• Manage all medical and first aid aspects
• Supervise a crew 24 hr/day, 7day/week for the duration of the program or according to the YCC leader schedule
• Organize and lead recreational and educational outings for the crew
Technical Advisor Functions-
• Manage the quality & technique of the work performed
• Manage tools and equipment assigned to the team, including maintenance throughout the season
• Promote leadership development within team and evaluate success & potential
Partnership Representative Functions-
• Manage relationship with agency partner
• Work collaboratively with agency on program logistics
• Ensure successful and timely completion of work project
Program Administrator Functions-
• Complete pre-program duties on and off site
• Complete required program reporting and documentation
• Assist Program Staff in budget management and reconciliation
• Ensure compliance with all SCA policies & procedures
• Represent SCA in a positive and professional manner
Qualifications:
• Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
• Must have ability to legally work in the US
• Must be able to attend mandatory Crew Leader training in May
• Must possess current medical certification (Wilderness First Responder & Wilderness First Aid preferred) & CPR by the start date of the orientation training
• Documented experience working with youth or young adults (ages 14-18) and experience as a teacher or leader in an informal or formal educational environment
• Experience with outdoor living skills. Can include: camping (two weeks or more), hiking, safety awareness, leave no trace, kayaking, basic map/compass skills
• Experience with conservation work skills or related skills, preferred i.e. trail maintenance, trail construction, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening
• Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
• Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required for some positions
• Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
• Experience in Alaskan environment preferred
• Experience working with Alaska Native youth preferred
• *Preference will be given to candidates willing to lead multiple programs during the summer.
Compensation: $600/week (including training weeks), paid travel to/from training and site, food provided during programs, access to group gear
