Job Title: Long Trail Patrol (trail crew) Crew Lead

Job Description: The Long Trail Patrol was established in 1931 as the official trail crew of the Green Mountain Club and has been a staple of our field staff ever since. The focus of the crew is to work on heavily used and damaged sections of trail throughout Vermont, on both state and National Forest land. The crew leader works closely with the Field Coordinator and Field Supervisors to scout and plan work projects during “pre-season” and to handle project logistics throughout the work season. Acting as a role model of dedication and sound judgement, the LTP Leader guides and instructs the crew as they work hard, have fun, and forge lasting friendships.

Long Trail Patrol crews consist of the crew leader and three to four crew members. Crews work Monday through Friday in the field in all weather (except blizzards). They work with rock and lumber, as well as native timber as projects require. Projects may require power tools including but not limited to impact drivers, rock drills, chainsaws, and brush-cutters. Monday through Thursday nights crews camp near their work sites and share a communal camp kitchen, as well as camp chores. LTP crews provide their own personal camping gear and food. The GMC provides transportation to the work site, tools, personal protective equipment, and some group equipment (stove, fuel, cook-ware, first-aid supplies). Communal day-off housing is available in Waterbury Center or Danby, VT based on project locations.
