Job Title: Maine Trail Crew Leader and Assistant Leaders
Job Description: The Crew Leader and Assistant Crew Leader will train and supervise a hybrid crew including paid staff and volunteers (a team of up to eight) in trail reconstruction and backcountry camping. The Trail Crew will build stone steps, waterbars, retaining walls, and trail relocations The Crew Leaders will ensure safe and sanitary conditions at camp and work sites, transport crews safely, and respond appropriately to emergency situations. Advanced training with stone cutting, stonework, rigging systems, and other trail work will be taught as well as training in CPR/First aid. Project locations will vary along remote section of the Appalachian Trail and include near the Kennebec River, Fourth Mountain, Namakanta Stream, Wood Rat's Spring, and the Hunt Trail on Katahdin. Days off housing will be at Lake George Regional Park in Skowhegan, Maine.
Qualifications:
• Backcountry backpacking, camping, and cooking experience
• One or more seasons in a trail leadership role
• Ability to take responsibility for all aspects of a trail crew
• Good organizational skills
• Ability to teach trail skills and motivate others
• Good health and physical fitness
• Ability to hike long distances in mountain terrain
• Valid driver's license and clean driving record
• Ability to maintain a safe and enjoyable work environment under challenging conditions
• Comfortable working without direct supervision
• Willingness to comply with a COVID-19 safety plan (proof of vaccination is required)
Pay range: $18 - $20.5 per hour, housing and food is provided
Dates: mid-May - mid-October, 2023
