Job Title: OSMP Trails Crew Member
Job Description: Overall Job Objective
Work as part of a 3-6 person crew to construct, repair, and maintain trails and related facilities and to perform related duties as assigned. Work involves heavy lifting, digging, carrying, brush cutting and operation of power equipment in the construction and maintenance of natural surface and crusher fines trails. Position emphasizes and involves a variety of knowledge and abilities in the field of trail construction and maintenance, including excavation and grading of trails, carpentry, dry stone work, and operation of a motor vehicle, mechanized equipment and trailers. Position requires hiking up to 10 hours per day, carrying a backpack and hand tools, and working outside in occasionally inclement weather. Positions require working up to 10 hours per day. Positions require the ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry loads of 50 pounds repeatedly on grades and sloped terrain. Positions require bending for long periods using hand tools and using equipment that vibrate severely such as chainsaws, power carriers, rock breakers and plate compactors for up to 10 hours a day. Trail Labor positions will work with Jr. Rangers, AmeriCorps crews, volunteers and other groups and individuals assigned to trail projects. Depending on experience, Trail Worker positions may be required to assist in training and working with Jr. Rangers, AmeriCorps crews, volunteers, and other groups and individuals assigned to trail projects.
Duties & Responsibilities
• Work as part of a crew to construct, repair and maintain trails and related facilities including, clearing, excavation, and grading; tread, drainage and structure construction, maintenance, and repair; basic carpentry work; and use of associated tools and equipment.
• Clean, repair, maintain and organize vehicles, tools and equipment.
• Work as part of a team.
• Take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents. Use all proper safety equipment. Report all accidents and damage to city property.
• Operate and use specialized equipment: trail dozers, excavators, power carriers, gas powered rock drills/breakers, winch and rigging equipment, chainsaws, grinders and sharpening tools, etc.
• Depending on experience: Assist the Trail Crew Leader in training crew members in essential skills, abilities and safety; ensure crew uses safe work practices, and coordinate guidance from the Trails Supervisor and Trail Maintenance Staff. Provide work leadership and skills training to volunteers and other groups performing trail work.
• Remain generally alert to conditions and events occurring in assigned areas indicating misuse. Anticipate needed maintenance and reports such problems to supervisor.
• Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A specific length of time and experience is not required for this position, but candidate must show that through experience and training you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

• Ability to work effectively for extended periods performing work which involves heavy lifting, digging, carrying, brush cutting, and operation of power equipment in the construction and maintenance of trails.
• Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry loads of 50 pounds repeatedly on grades and sloped terrain.
• Strong outdoor skills, including knowledge of hiking, backcountry navigation, and outdoor emergency preparedness.
• Ability to work outdoors in all types of inclement weather and hike up to 10 hours over uneven terrain.
• Ability to use and perform preventative maintenance on basic hand tools common to the trade, including shovel, pick mattock, McLeod, Pulaski, axe, pruning saws, loppers, rock bars, sledge hammers, and wheelbarrows, etc.
• Ability to use and perform preventative maintenance on basic power equipment common to the trade, including power carriers, brush cutters, augers, rock breakers, chainsaws, and plate compactors, etc.
• Ability to clean and organize supplies, vehicles, and equipment and follow established procedures.
• Ability to evaluate conditions in assigned area and make judgments related to safety.
• Ability and willingness to work as part of a team and learn new skills.
• Effective interpersonal skills, including communication and conflict resolution skills.
• Ability to keep accurate records, organize information, and follow established procedures
• Driving skill, experience and acceptable motor vehicle record; valid driver's license.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS – In addition to the required minimum qualifications:
• Skill and knowledge in common trail construction, repair, and maintenance techniques such as: carpentry and stone work (retaining walls, steps, staircases), drainage structures (swales, waterbars, culverts, etc), turnpike, puncheon, cribbing, simple short-span stringer bridges, trail tread (full bench), gabions, vegetation clearing, and placement/finish of surfacing materials. Includes selection of proper materials. Applies to both ADA-accessible and non-ADA trails.
• Ability to assist the Trail Crew Leader with organizing and training other crew members in essential skills, abilities, and safety.
• Ability to provide work leadership and trail skills training to volunteers and other groups performing trail work.
• Knowledge and ability to assist the Trail Crew Leader with directing the crew in safe work practices and coordinate guidance from other Trails Staff.
• Skill in the use and maintenance of power/mechanized equipment common to the trade, including winches, Pionjars, trail dozers, and excavators.
• Skill and ability to safely buck aerial and multi-tensioned fallen trees and to safely fall sound trees in the direction on their lean.
• Knowledge of basic rigging techniques and configurations, including high lines.
• Ability to perform risk and hazard analysis and implement proper safety controls; ability to judge existing and incoming weather patterns and plan work tasks accordingly.
• Certified Basic First Aid

Physical and Mental Effort: Ability to perform a wide range of strenuous physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment.
