Job Title: SCA Los Padres Fire Team Project Leader

Job Description: The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire young adults in Corps programs.

The Fire Management Team is a six month program that gives members training, certifications, and experience working in fuels and resource management. A team of ten crew members, led by two Project Leaders, will be working in partnership with the US Forest Service to complete a fire/fuels management project. The crew’s project will work to provide fire hazard reduction, reduce the risk of wildfire, improve the health of mature forest, and protect high value recreation areas in the forest.

Project Leader Dates (tentative): August 29, 2016 – March 17, 2017

Project Leader Training Dates (tentative): August 29, 2016 – September 16, 2016

Member Program Dates (tentative): October 2, 2016 – March 10, 2017

Primary Responsibilities:
-Act as a Crew Manager guiding crew dynamics and facilitating teamwork
-Function as a Technical Advisor assisting in training corps members to complete quality work
-Serve as a Partnership Representative managing relationship with agency partner and ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects
-Perform tasks as a Program Administrator by communicating with SCA staff, completing documentation and managing a budget

Qualifications:
-Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
-Must have ability to legally work in the US
-Must be able to attend mandatory Project Leader Training: 8/29/2016 to 9/16/2016
-Current Wilderness First Aid & CPR required by the start of training (Wilderness First Responder preferred)
-Prior experience supervising groups in an outdoor setting
-Experience with conservation work skills or related skills, preferred i.e. trail maintenance, trail construction, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening
-Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
-Ability to pass the Wildland Firefighters’ arduous pack test
-Preferred: previous fire and chainsaw experience, S212 Federal chainsaw certification, “red card” (Firefighter Type 2) certification, forestry, geography, GIS, range management, outdoor education and/or related subjects, plant identification, map & compass skills, camping skills, enthusiasm for the outdoors, and a sense of adventure
-Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
-Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards

Compensation: Starting at $545/per week, depending on experience.
