Avid Trails - PTBA Member Company - Salt Lake City, UT

Avid Trails is looking for experienced trail builders to join our Salt Lake City-based crew full-time. Work is available beginning immediately and for the duration of this season, ideally developing into a full-time longterm position. Opportunities for travel for other locations and work on a variety of projects ranging from multi-use trails, mountain bike trails, trail planning projects and pump track construction also exist.


Here’s the scoop:


  • Position: Operator & Field Lead

  • Responsibilities & Job Description:

    • Work minimum 40 hrs per week on Salt Lake City based trail builds when work is available and in season, with potential for overtime work to complete projects and during peak season. Opportunity to travel to other project locations in the future.

    • Operate trail building equipment including 1.5 - 3 ton mini excavators and Sutter trail dozer. Training on trail building techniques and process to be provided.

    • Participate in hand tool work as needed. If more manpower is needed, we need you to be good with grabbing a tool, chainsaw, etc. and chipping in.

    • Coordinate day-to-day activity of crew, including developing a daily work plan and communicating objectives to crew members.

    • Perform basic routine “trailside” maintenance on equipment including fueling, regular greasing; checking condition, banging out and changing of air filters; blowing out radiators, replacement of pins and bolts as needed, etc.

    • Keep inventory of hand tools, review condition of chainsaws, perform basic maintenance as needed.

    • Regular reporting (verbal or via email) on job progress to Avid owners / project manager.

    • Utilize GPS technology such as Avenza or Gaia (mobile apps) to track project, provide geo-referenced photographs where needed, and become familiar with project / environmental constraints.

    • Most importantly, help ensure finished trail meets project specifications and the Avid Trails standard for delivering high quality, sustainable trails.

  • Growth Opportunities:

    • Develop Operator & Crew Lead position into Foreman role based on performance.

    • Opportunity to manage multiple trail builds at once in Salt Lake City Market. Participation as equipment operator and trail builder will still be required!

    • Potential future participation in field design and layout of trail projects.

    • Opportunity to travel to builds in other markers (e.g. Florida, Texas) during off season months in SLC.

  • Compensation & Benefits:

    • Hourly compensation is based on experience.

    • Standard mileage, per diem and lodging provided where appropriate.

    • Health care and PTO available for the right candidate after 3 months of employment.
