This dynamic position offers an excellent mix of administration and field work to deliver AMC’s oldest and most extensive trail volunteer programs in the northeast! This position is responsible for the administration of AMC’s trails volunteer programs based in the North Country, including the recruitment, retention, and recognition of over 400 volunteers and 12 seasonal employees. The majority of the programming is based out of AMC Camp Dodge Trails Training Center in the White Mountains, NH.  

The Trails Volunteer Programs Supervisor, North Country (NCTVPS) directly supervises the seasonal staff and volunteers associated with the North Country Volunteer Trail Crew Programs including the AMC AmeriCorps NH, NH-JAG Paid Youth Crew, Adult Volunteer Vacations, Custom Crews, and Adopt-A-Trail programming in NH and ME. The NCTVPS is also responsible for fostering relationships with volunteers and land managers to ensure future collaboration. 

The NCTVPS reports to the AMC Trail Programs Operations Manager and will work closely with a variety of staff located at Pinkham Notch Visitor Center, Highland Center at Crawford Notch, AMC Headquarters in Boston, MA, Western Massachusetts, and Maine. This position will also work with volunteer leaders, AMC committees, ATC, USFS, various land trusts, and other partners as needed.  

What you’ll do: 

Volunteer Vacations Programs, & Custom Trail Crews:
- Recruit, hire and supervise up to 3 summer seasonal employees including the Camp Dodge Field Coordinator, Camp, Trail Crew Leaders, and other program related positions
- Purchase and maintain all program related field gear, tools, and safety equipment
- Oversee all logistical aspects of these volunteer programs in New Hampshire, some locations in Maine
- Coordinate and plan custom designed trail projects for groups, such as Scout groups, school groups, and camp groups in NH and ME
- Assist in the promotion of Custom Crew program opportunities 
- Coordinate with AMC staff, including the Contact Service Center and Group Sales Manager, on the registration and payment process for these volunteer programs. 

AMC/NH-JAG Trails Program:
- Recruit, hire, and supervisor 2 summer seasonal trail crew leaders to work with the NH-JAG youth crew.
- Directly oversee the AMC/NH-Jobs for America’s Graduates (NH-JAG) Trails Program. A paid summer youth crew led by two AMC trail crew leaders in Berlin, NH
- Collaborate with land managing partners and funders to plan trail projects for NH-JAG crews and report back on accomplishments

AMC AmeriCorps NH:
- Collaborate with AMC’s AmeriCorps Program Manager and Trails Volunteer Programs Supervisor for Southern New England on the delivery of the AMC AmeriCorps NH by hiring/training/supporting 10 AMC AmeriCorps Members for 3 or 6 month terms of Service in NH and parts of ME.
- Keep records and report statistics on AMC AmeriCorps NH accomplishments throughout the field season.

AMC Adopt-A-Trail Program:
- Develop and lead Skill Session Trail Adopter trainings throughout the field season
- Review all Adopter work reports, coordinate data entry, and assist Adopters with trail needs.
- Recruit volunteers, organize and maintain the Adopt-A-Trail database
- Partner with White Mountain National Forest, NH State Parks, and others in coordination of the Adopt-A-Trail program in NH and ME


What you’ll do continued: 
- Maintain program policy expectations and safety practices on the North Country Trails Volunteer Programs
- Collaborate with the Trails Volunteer Programs Department to develop programs, schedules, and program rates
- Lead occasional trainings, both for AMC’s staff and volunteers, and for external participants
- Collect reports and hours from all North Country programs and compile into annual reports of volunteer enrollment, work hours and accomplishments, including reports for Acadia National Park, the ATC, and USFS
- Recruits, hires, trains, and provides direct supervision and serves as a role model to Trails Volunteer Program seasonal staff 
- Manage and develop volunteer recognition initiatives
- Serve as a staff liaison to AMC’s volunteer-led chapter trail committees, as well as the Inter-Chapter Trail Committee. Schedule, facilitate, or participate in committee meetings as needed. 
- Maintain the databases for all programs
- Participate with a team in administering the Stewardship Society volunteer recognition program
- Work closely with the AMC Professional Trail Crew Manager to prioritize volunteer trail work projects
- Participate in other AMC committees, teams, and working groups as needed
- Other duties as assigned.

What we’re looking for: 
- Minimum of 2-4 years of trail maintenance and construction, natural resource management, and outdoor programming, with previous supervisory and leadership experience. Experience can be in any combination of staff or volunteer roles.
- Bachelor’s degree with studies in Recreation, Natural Resources Management or other relevant disciplines is desirable
- Excellent organizational skills that include the ability to handle many different projects simultaneously and find creative solutions to problems
- Proven successful supervisory ability of seasonal employees 
- Proficiency in the use of computers with associated word processing, desktop publishing, and database programs 
- Works well with others in a professional environment and can interact with the public and volunteers under sometimes challenging conditions
- Must be willing to work occasional weekends and evenings and be able to travel and work in the field
- Familiarity with backcountry recreation, environmental issues, and trails in the Northeast is desirable
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving history subject to a driving record check conducted by the AMC
- Physically able to travel safely on foot in all weather conditions on unimproved trails carrying up to 60 lbs of gear.
- Ability to perform and teach a variety of trail work activities. Ability to operate standard office equipment
