Summary Description
Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club promotes the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of America's Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Within the Operations Department, the AMC’s Volunteer Trails Programs engage people of all ages in meaningful and enjoyable trail stewardship opportunities. Under the supervision of the Trails Volunteer Programs Supervisor, the Field Coordinator will provide training and supervision to a variety of trail programs in the Southern New England Region.

The AMC is a member of the 21 Century Conservation Corps and is a proud partner of The Corps Network. The Corps Network is the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps. The AMC is one of 130 Corps across the country that provides young adults and veterans the opportunity to serve our country through projects on public lands and in rural and urban communities.

Duties and Responsibilities

This independent position is 40 hours per week, supported by the Southern New England Trails Volunteer Programs Supervisor. The position requires group management and trail work experience as well as office work, organizing completed work reports and coordinating with program participants and AMC staff. This position is to divide their time between supporting an AmeriCorps trail crew, a New England Trail Youth Crew, and other trail crews and volunteer groups as needed.

• Provide formal and informal training to an AmeriCorps trail crew in collaboration with other AMC Staff. This will include formal training at the beginning of the season, including trail work, tool use, safety practices, and group leadership. Will work with other AMC Trails Staff to train AmeriCorps members on project-specific skills as needed. 
• Provide logistic and field support to AmeriCorps members on, primarily front-country, stewardship projects, between 1-5 days long. 
• Work alongside New England Trail Youth crew to provide technical and morale support
• Occasionally train and lead groups of volunteers on trail work project days
• Foster a spirit of cooperation, safety, teamwork, responsible stewardship, and fun while working with crews
• Work with Program Supervisor and other AMC staff to coordinate trail projects, daily logistics, supply needs, and maintain AMC trail work standards.
• Work with project partners at Federal and State levels in a professional and timely manner, communicating by email, telephone and in person to confirm projects and dates, coordinate scouting and field visits, as well as provide any requested updates on project progress, including descriptions, project report forms, and photos.
• Collect and compile accurate and thorough project reports and safety forms from crews weekly. Tracking project progress and safety forms to ensure quality and completion and reporting such to the Program Supervisor.
• Serve as the primary responder/coordinator in the event of an emergency in the field
• Conduct informal check-ins with each member of the crew, as well as group debriefs as needed. Report any relevant notes, questions or requests to the Program Supervisor promptly. 
• Participate in an informal check-ins with the Program Supervisor, for purposes of reporting, coordinating, and mutual feedback exchange, at least twice a month. 
• Assist with maintenance of tools, equipment and facility as needed
• Drive 12-passenger vans as needed
• Along with Facility Coordinator, act as a leader and role model at the Noble View facility and enforce all community guidelines to protect and respect others who share the space
• Understand and enforce all local, state, federal and AMC COVID-19 policies and guidelines
• As needed and as able, be available for occasional weekend work

Qualifications
• Demonstrated leadership experience
• A minimum of two seasons of trail maintenance work is preferred
• Experience spending extended periods of time outdoors
• Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds
• Ability to adapt to changing conditions and maintain strong decision-making skills
• Ability to set goals, prioritize tasks, and delegate roles to a group
• Basic competency with Excel, Outlook, Word, and other Microsoft products
• Ability to self-manage data, organize and communicate such data to supervisor, and compile reports
• Strong self-motivation and communication skills
• Ability to carry heavy loads (80+ lbs.) for long distances
• Must be at least 21+ years of age and hold a valid driver’s license and clear driving record (driving record check will be performed)
• Clear criminal background check (performed by AMC Human Resources Dept.)
