Job Title: Volunteer Crew Leader

Job Description: The Volunteer Trail Crew Leader is a paid seasonal employee of the Adirondack Mountain Club, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s principal partner in the maintenance and reconstruction of backcountry trails on Forest Preserve lands. The Volunteer Trail Crew Leader is responsible for working with, educating, supervising and motivating volunteers. Crews live and work in a backcountry setting in the Adirondack Park. Using basic hand tools, a wide variety of trail stabilization structures are constructed using native materials. Approximately half of the trail projects in a given season are specifically for high school age (14-17) participants. The Volunteer Trail Crew Leaders provides for a safe, positive, and educational volunteer experience while accomplishing the highest quality trail work possible. 

Applicants should have prior experience leading and teaching groups of all ages in a wilderness setting and have trail work experience while keeping an open mind to learn new trail construction/maintenance techniques. Candidates should have an exceptional ability to motivate and engage volunteers under adverse conditions (i.e. insects, mud, poor weather, and difficult group dynamics) and the capability to keep a positive attitude while supervising a group to accomplish the task at hand. Applicants should have experience backpacking and the capacity to carry tools and supplies for a long distance. Candidates should have a current first aid certification and knowledge of low-impact camping techniques. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and be 21 years old.
