Job Title: SCA Hawaii Invasive Species Team Project Leader
Job Description: The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks one experienced conservation leader to manage members for the Hawaii Invasive Species Team for a 4 month period.
The SCA is fielding one crew, with one leader and four members, to remove invasive species (wildlife and plants) on Maui in partnership with the University of Hawai’i. This crew will be the first year of partnership between the University of Hawai’I, Maui Invasive Species Committee, and the SCA.
Leader Dates (tentative) include training and pre/post season tasks:
September 26, 2016 – January 7, 2017
Member Program Dates (tentative): October 9, 2016 – December 31, 2016
Primary Responsibilities:
Crew Manager
-Ensure successful, quality, and timely work for a five person team
-Guide crew dynamics and facilitate teamwork
-Actively manage project/ member risk to maintain a safe work environment
Technical Advisor
-Assist in the technical skills training of corps members
-Manage the quality & technique of work performed
-Promote leadership development within team and evaluate success & potential
Partnership Representative
-Manage relationship with agency partner(s)
-Work collaboratively with agency on program logistics
-Ensure successful and timely completion of work project
Program Administrator
-Communicate with SCA field support staff
-Complete required program reporting and documentation
-Manage budget and necessary purchasing for crew and project
-Ensure compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies & procedures
Qualifications:
-Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
-Must have ability to legally work in the US
-Minimum 2 years prior experience supervising young adults in an outdoor setting, teaching in an educational environment a plus
-Must be able to attend mandatory Crew Leader training
-Current Wilderness First Aid & CPR required by the start of training (Wilderness First Responder preferred)
-Experience with invasive plant and wildlife management, preferred i.e. landscaping, gardening, seed collection, invasive plant removal, and plant ID
-Ability to hike up to 10 miles per day and perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
-Ability to work and live in the outdoors exposed to the elements for extended periods of time
-Valid driver’s license and Motor Vehicle Record that meets SCA standards required
-Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
Desired Skill Set:
-Current Wilderness First Aid or higher/CPR
-Previous work in conservation corps, environmental field work, or environmental education
-Preferred: experience with herbicide use and backpack sprayers, invasive removal
Compensation: Weekly salary starts at $545/per week (depending on experience)
