SCA Visitor Use Survey Project Leader

Job Description

The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks experienced; quality oriented outdoor leader to work in partnership with the Army Corps of Engineers to collect valuable interviews on the uses of ACE protected sites. Members, in pairs, will collect recreation use information from visitors, primarily through roadside interviews. The interview sites include lakes and other recreation areas. The team will also be conducting weekly conservation service projects such as trail work, water quality monitoring, and invasive plant management. Teamwork will be a key to success in travel logistics, travelling to survey sites, and implementing a safe and effective plan. The team will be made up of one Project Leader and three team members. This position is full time, seasonal, and will be based in locations central to where the team is surveying.

Program Dates: Position begins April 8th with Project Leader Orientation for one week in Oakland, CA to cover technical skills and SCA processes. Corps members will arrive in late May. Project Leader end date is late September, 2016 (dates are subject to change). Project Leaders may also opt to stay for another crew in the fall.

Primary Responsibilities:
-Lead and manage work outcomes and crew dynamics
-Facilitate team operations: food planning/purchasing, housing arrangements, and vehicles
-Actively manage project/member risk to maintain a safe work environment
-Assist in the technological skills training of corps members
-Manage the quality & technique of work performed
-Promote leadership development within team and evaluate success & potential
-Manage relationships with agency partners
-Work collaboratively with agency partners on program logistics
-Ensure successful and timely completion of work projects
-Communicate with SCA field support staff as required
-Complete required program reporting and documentation
-Oversee presentation of project data to agency partner
-Manage budget and necessary purchasing for crew and project
-Ensure compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies & procedures

Qualifications:
-Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
-Must be able to legally work in the US
-Strong computer skills
-Must be able to attend mandatory Project Leader training starting April 8th
-Current Wilderness First Aid & CPR required by the start of the training
-Experience working with young adults (ages 18-24)
-Experience working with the public
-Experience with conservation work skills or related skills preferred (i.e. trail maintenance, trail constructions, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening)
-Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
-Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards

Compensation: $545 per week, paid bi-weekly. With housing provided, access to a program vehicle, and some seasonal benefits available.
